Bletchley Park is the location
where Allied cryptologists broke the German Enigma
cipher and other German ciphers. Cracking the German
navy's Enigma cipher was crucial in the battle
against U-boats. Up until the time the naval Enigma
was cracked U-boats were sinking Allied ships faster
than new ships could be built.
Cracking the Army and Luftwaffe
Enigma allowed the Allies to know German plans for
defending against the Normandy invasion and
conducting the war in North Africa.
The first digital computer,
Colossus, was built at Bletchley Park as part of the
war effort. The secret work done at Bletchley Park
wasn't revealed until the early 1970s, over 25 years
after World War 2 ended. Because of the extreme
secrecy, many inventions developed at Bletchley were
not revealed for years and Bletchley personnel never
received the credit they were due.
Bletchley Park does
not receive any funding from the British or American
government. Bletchley Park relies on contributions
from the public to maintain its historic buildings
and machines. Advantura has contributed over $6000
to Bletchley Park during the last three years.
Please consider visiting their web site and making a
contribution to this historic facility. Thank you.
