  What is Cryptology?

Cryptology is a science made up of two different disciplines:

bulletCryptography - Protecting data from being examined by unauthorized persons by using codes, ciphers or both.
bulletCryptanalysis - Reading passwords or data you are not authorized to read by "cracking" the cipher(s) or code(s) that were used to protect it.

Cryptology is not a science that can be learned by acquiring a certification, such as the CISSP. While the CISSP is an excellent certification and provides information security professionals with a broad overview of information security areas, it covers only some of the basic concepts of cryptology. You or your organization should use a professional cryptologist with years of academic training and industry experience.

We do not remarket or receive a commission from any cryptographic product provider. We give professional, unbiased advice and can guide you through the process of procuring and implementing an encryption product or products.

Why you or your organization might need cryptography:

You would never send private or sensitive data to someone on a postcard. You would use an envelope to protect the contents. Sending information over a computer network or the Internet is exactly like using that postcard unless you use cryptography to put an electronic envelope around the data. Cryptography can be used not only to protect data, but to ensure that you are the sender of the data, not someone pretending to be you.

In companies that store sensitive information such as names, addresses, Social Security Numbers or health information, cryptography can be used to make sure that only authorized staff can read the data.

Notice up till now, we haven't used the word encryption. While encryption using a cipher is best 99% of the time for protecting data, we can also demonstrate other methods like steganography. We will recommend the best solution for your need. Some federally-certified products are even free.

Why you or your organization might need cryptanalysis

If an employee leaves and no one remembers the password to the QuickBooks data, or you suspect an employee is misusing company time or data and need into his account without the employee knowing about it we can solve these problems for you. Our new Tesla supercomputer can find passwords in a couple of days that used to take over a year to find. We can crack passwords used by many popular programs in just a few minutes.

Classes

We offer cryptology classes that provide all of the information needed to pass the cryptography component of the CISSP. This class also provides information beyond the CISSP-level, some of which corrects or augments information contained in CISSP preparation books. We use a variety of teaching aids in our classes including a real German Enigma machine from World War Two.
