Can Brazilian Tourists Drive in Spain? Your Guide to Renting a car or campervan in Spain!

Updated: Mar 2

We got this question from a Brazilian client who loves Kombis. The answer is YES, and here are the details!

Yes, Brazilian tourists can legally drive in Spain for up to 6 months (180 days) using their original Brazilian CNH. This is thanks to a reciprocal agreement between Brazil and Spain. You don’t strictly need an International Driving Permit (IDP), but you must carry your original CNH and your Passport at all times. An official translation that you can get in 24 hours is a nice plus!

1. The Law: Brazil vs. Spain (2026 Update)

Spain and Brazil share a bilateral agreement that recognizes each other’s driving licenses for tourists. As long as you are in Spain on a tourist visa (or the 90-day visa-free period), your CNH is valid.

  • Duration: Valid for 6 months from your entry date into the Schengen Area.

  • Requirements: You must be at least 18 years old to drive a car and 23–25 years old to rent most campervans.

2. The Problem: The "IDP Headache" in Brazil

In Brazil, getting an International Driving Permit (PID - Permissão Internacional para Dirigir) through DETRAN can be a bureaucratic nightmare. It often takes 5 to 10 business days plus shipping. Who has time for that when you're dreaming of hitting the open road?

3. The Solution: The 24-Hour "Sworn Translation" Hack

If you don’t have an IDP, Spanish law (DGT) allows an alternative: a Traducción Jurada (Sworn Translation). While your Brazilian CNH is in Portuguese—which is very similar to Spanish—local police (Guardia Civil) may still require an official Spanish version in the event of a road check or a minor accident.

Why the Sworn Translation is a good last-minute solution:

  • Speed: It can be done in 24–48 hours.

  • Digital: You just email a photo of your CNH; you don’t need to visit an office.

  • Legal: It carries the official stamp of a translator recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  • It shows good intent to local police in case they stop you.
