One of the most common questions I get from renters is: “Where can I sleep overnight without problems?” The good news is, there are options for all tastes! There are four main ways to stay overnight with a campervan. Below, I’ll explain each option clearly, with real examples from Costa Brava, one of the most popular road-trip areas in Spain.
1. FREE Overnight Spots (Park4Night & Similar Apps)
Best for: flexibility, low budget, spontaneous travel
Cost: free
Apps like Park4Night show places where other campervan travelers have parked overnight. These spots can be public parking areas, quiet streets, viewpoints, or seaside locations. In Spain, sleeping inside your campervan is legal as long as you follow a few simple rules:
Don’t put anything outside (no chairs, tables, or awnings)
Don’t make noise
Park legally, not camping
Costa Brava Example: Just above Tossa de Mar, you will find some nice remote spots on the small roads..
My Tip:
Take the paid option on those apps (just €2 a month) to filter and see only the best spots. It’s super handy!
Arrive early in summer to snag those small spots, especially in Costa Brava.
Don’t worry, we have an external shower and a portable toilet for you! 😊
2. Campsites (Comfortable and Easy)
Best for: comfort, facilities, longer stays
Cost: usually €30–50 per night
Campsites are the easiest option if you want everything in one place. They usually offer:
Hot showers and toilets
Electricity
Water refill
Waste disposal
Costa Brava: There are lots of beautiful campsites by the beach, or even with a private beach. Be sure to book in advance! Exampme :Balena Alegre.
My Tip:
Go there when you need a good shower or want to chill out for a day or more on-site.
A good combo is to alternate between campsites and overnight stays in nature.
3. Áreas de Autocaravanas (Motorhome Areas)
Best for: legal overnight stays without campsite prices
Cost: usually €10–25 per night
These areas aren’t known enough! They are official areas designed specifically for campervans and are common all over Spain. They’re one of the safest overnight options. You typically get:
Legal overnight parking
Water refill and waste disposal
Sometimes electricity or toilets
Costa Brava Example: Motorhome areas in places like L’Estartit or Roses are practical, legal, and close to town.
My Tip: These spots are awesome in high season when campsites have gotten expensive. They’re an excellent, more affordable alternative!
4. Private Land & Backyards (Campspace, HomeCamper)
Best for: quiet nights, local experience
Cost: around €10–30 per night
Platforms like Campspace or HomeCamper let locals rent out space on private land, such as farms, gardens, vineyards, or rural properties.
Why People Love It:
Very quiet
Personal and friendly
Often more memorable than a campsite
My Tip: Choose a top-rated spot with a local activity (like a farmer or producer) for an even richer experience!
So… What’s the Best Option?
Most people traveling by campervan in Spain use a mix of all four options:
Free spots for remote, amazing nature sites
Campsites for comfort days and busier areas
Áreas de autocaravanas for cheap, legal stops
Private land for local experience and authenticity
That combination gives you the opportunity to both enjoy fully nature, local experince and comfort. What better than speaking to a farmer about its products, staying alone on top of a vieew point and then another day take a hot shower in a camping.
Planning Your Adventure
When you’re planning your trip, think about what you want from your overnight stays. Do you crave the comfort of a campsite? Or perhaps the thrill of parking in a secluded spot? Each option has its charm, and mixing them can enhance your adventure.
